I used to have a PID when I was a student. Does it still work?
Possibly. Up until recently, Virginia Tech purged PIDs about 6 months after graduation (PIDs could then be reassigned to others). However, Virginia Tech has recently moved to a 'PID for life' system where your PID will never be purged. If your PID is old, you will need to create a new one. If it still works, you will never need to create a new one.
How do I get a PID?
If you are a Virginia Tech alum, you will be asked to create a PID and password of your choice during the course registration process. If you don't want to register but want to create a PID anyway, go to the Alumni Gateway.
If you are not an alum but want to register for non-credit courses anyway, we will use the information you submit when you register to generate a PID for you in a batch process that runs every night. We'll inform you of your new PID by email and instruct you on how to create your password.
What is a PID?
Your PID is a unique Personal IDentifier. Your PID belongs to you and you only; it, along with your PID
password, serves to grant you access to e-mail, the Hokie SPA, Blackboard, some of the Library's databases, and
more. You must have one if you are taking a class through Virginia Tech.
Why can't I log in to MyVT to change my PID password?
You may need to upgrade some of your software (don't worry - all free). Please see the following information: http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/258/.
