Registration
Who can register for VTalumnNET courses?
  • Virginia Tech alumni:
can receive one free knowledge unit per year and pay to take other courses at any time.

  • Anyone else:
can pay to take courses (except those marked 'free only') at any time.

Note: some courses are free-only (they cannot be purchased); some cannot be taken for free (they must be purchased). Read the individual course descriptions for details.

To identify you as a Virginia Tech alum, we must be able to locate your alumni records. This may be difficult if your record is incomplete. To update or view your alumni records, use the Alumni Gateway.
The Registration Process
  1. Start by browsing the list of available courses and reading the descriptions.

  2. When you find one you like, click the icon to add it to your cart. Your free course (marked Course can be taken for free) will be determined by your selection. If you are not an alum or if you have already taken a free course this year, make sure you do not have any flagged courses (marked Course cannot be taken by non-alumni) on your list.

  3. Once you have created a list of courses, proceed to registration.

    • If you have a Virginia Tech PID (username), you will need to sign in using that identity. You must use your PID when registering, even if you are not selecting free courses, and cannot enter a course without one.

    • If you are an alum but do not have a PID (username), your first step will be to create one (based on your VT alumni record). Once you have a PID and password, you can sign in to complete the course registration process.

    • If you are not an alum and do not have a PID (username), we'll put you straight through to registration. You will get a VT PID, but you'll need to wait until your registration request has been submitted to our student database. Generally, we'll send you notification of your PID in about 24 hours.

You must have a PID and password to access the course content.

  4. If you have selected courses that require payment, we'll direct you to our secure, payment processing system.
Please note that we accept VISA and MASTERCARD only.

After Registration
After you complete the registration process, you will receive an email from us notifying you of admission to the course website (access is not immediate; please wait for email notification). If you are an alum or already have a PID, this email will arrive within several hours. If you are new to the Virginia Tech community, this email may take 1-2 days to arrive. From this point on, you will have open access to the course website for the duration period of the course. All courses are self-paced and can be accessed at any time.

If you have technical problems during or after registration, please submit our help request form.
Refunds
If you are not completely satisfied, a refund for your VTalumnNET, non-credit course subscriptions may be given for five days after the subscription purchase. After five days, no refunds will be given.

Refunds will be completed within 24 hours of the request and will be made directly to the credit card account. Please write vto@vt.edu and provide a short explanation with your request.
